Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What style of martial arts is taught at the school and where can I learn more about it?
A: Shaolin Kempo Karate is the style of martial arts taught throughout the Villari system. You can learn more about it on our History page, or on the official Fred Villari's web site.

Q: How many belts are there in the system?
A: New students will begin as a White Belt, 10 more levels will be earned before attaining a Black Belt. You can view our studio's Rank Chart here!

Q: How long will it take me to get a Black Belt?
A: Every child or adult at the school works at his or her own pace. On average it takes about 4 years to earn a Black Belt.

Q: How do I know when I am ready to advance to the next rank?
A: Students will earn rank advancement in their journey to Black Belt. There is a certain amount of material that is required for each rank and a certain amount of skill is needed when demonstrating those techniques. When an instructor feels that a student is ready to move up in rank, that student is put on a test with other candidates. Tests are usually held once a month.

Q: Are the rank tests difficult, and how long do they last?
A: Test vary in length of time, usually between 1 and 4 hours, depending on the amount of students on the test, as well as the rank being tested for. Rank is something that is never given out to a student, you will work hard for your rank and will feel rewarded upon attaining it.

Q: Do you teach weapons at the school?
A: Yes, as in many Kempo Karate schools, there is an area of focus on weaponry. However, working with weapons is completely optional. Students may choose to learn weapons such as: Sai, Staff, Sword, Three Sectional Staff, Kama, Tonfa, or Escrima Sticks.

Q: Will I be required to enter tournaments?
A: Like weapons, tournaments are also completely optional. Some students like to compete and others choose not to. For those interested in tournaments, we'll work hard at building the skills required for competition.

Q: How many classes should I attend each week?
A: Students typically attend 2 or 3 classes per week depending on their schedule. However, practicing at home is an important continuation of what you've learned in class.

Q: Do I have to be in good shape to begin training?
A: No! Everyone who is willing to work hard and practice will benefit from learning martial arts. As with any sport, you will reap the benefits of physical and mental activity regardless of your physical condition.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to call the school.
